Why do many cultures construct rigid gender roles despite the existence of gender on a spectrum?

Many cultures create strict gender roles because they help organize society and provide clear expectations for behavior. Even though we now understand that gender exists on a spectrum, where people can identify in many different ways, these traditional roles can be hard to change.
