However, if meritocracy is not truly fair, it can lead to inequality based on factors like race or wealth, rather than just merit. For example, if two students apply for a scholarship, but one has access to better resources and education because of their family's wealth, the playing field isn't level, and that can create inequality. So, in this way, meritocracy can lead to inequality when it doesn't account for the different starting points people have in life.
