Adaptive immunity is to vaccines as innate immunity is to what?

Adaptive immunity learns from a specific encounter with a pathogen, and vaccines give the body that memory without the danger of a real infection. Innate immunity, on the other hand, reacts immediately and nonspecifically to any invading microorganism. So, while vaccines train the adaptive arm, the innate arm is engaged by the presence of a pathogen or infection. For example, when a virus enters a cell, the innate system releases interferons and activates macrophages right away, before the adaptive system has a chance to learn from the attack.
