Telophase in Mitosis

Telophase is the fourth stage of mitosis, during which the separated sister chromatids reach the opposite poles of the cell, the nuclear envelope re-forms around each set of chromosomes, and the chromosomes begin to de-condense back into chromatin. This stage is followed by cytokinesis, which divides the cytoplasm and completes cell division.

Overview

Telophase is a critical stage in the process of mitosis, where the chromosomes that have been separated during earlier phases begin to de-condense, and the nuclear envelope reforms around each set of chromosomes. This stage is essential for ensuring that each daughter cell receives an identical set ...

Key Terms

Mitosis
The process of cell division that results in two identical daughter cells.

Example: Mitosis is essential for growth and repair in multicellular organisms.

Chromosome
A structure made of DNA and proteins that contains genetic information.

Example: Humans have 46 chromosomes in each somatic cell.

Nuclear Envelope
A double membrane that surrounds the nucleus in eukaryotic cells.

Example: The nuclear envelope disintegrates during prophase.

Cytokinesis
The division of the cytoplasm to form two separate daughter cells.

Example: Cytokinesis occurs after telophase in animal cells.

De-condensation
The process by which tightly packed chromosomes loosen and become less visible.

Example: De-condensation occurs during telophase.

Cell Cycle
The series of events that take place in a cell leading to its division and replication.

Example: The cell cycle includes interphase and mitotic phases.
