Telomeres and Aging

Telomeres are repetitive nucleotide sequences located at the ends of linear chromosomes that protect them from deterioration or fusion with neighboring chromosomes. Cellular aging, or senescence, occurs as telomeres shorten with each cell division, ultimately leading to a loss of cellular function and an increased risk of age-related diseases.

Overview

Telomeres are essential components of chromosomes that protect genetic information during cell division. As cells divide, telomeres shorten, which is a natural part of the aging process. When telomeres become critically short, cells can no longer divide, leading to aging and increased susceptibility...

Key Terms

Telomere
A repetitive DNA sequence at the end of a chromosome.

Example: Telomeres protect the chromosome from deterioration.

Chromosome
A structure made of DNA that contains genetic information.

Example: Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes.

Mitosis
The process of cell division that results in two identical daughter cells.

Example: Mitosis is essential for growth and repair.

Cellular Aging
The gradual decline in cellular function over time.

Example: Cellular aging is linked to telomere shortening.

Cancer
A disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth.

Example: Many cancers are associated with telomere dysfunction.

Genetic Therapy
A treatment that modifies genes to cure or prevent disease.

Example: Genetic therapy may target telomere maintenance.
